Does anyone else get so excited for Christmas that they kind of forget about Thanksgiving? It’s like a bonus holiday to me. I’m so focused on the end of December that Thanksgiving always sneaks up on me, and it’s a welcome break for spending time with family. Sometimes I like to think of it as a trial run for Christmas – we eat all of the same food, we see the same loved ones.
One thing that’s definitely different between the two is the clothing though. For Christmas, I’m all for sparkle and drama. Give me a sequin dress, velvet skirt or a whole bunch of red and green tartan. But for Thanksgiving, I gravitate toward styles that are a lot more laid back. Still festive for celebrating the day, but something that’s subtle and comfortable while still being put together.
This outfit is essentially my perfect Thanksgiving attire. A stretchy turtleneck bodysuit that’s great for the chilly weather, a fit-and-flare skirt that won’t be uncomfortable after several courses of dinner, some ballet flat Mary Janes for a ton of Black Friday shopping afterwards, and an unfussy tonal bag that ties the look together – all in harvest-inspired hues.
Thanksgiving always feels like the last great opportunity to really lean into the colors of fall before red, green, silver and gold take over. I like to try to capitalize on this moment by including them in my look. Reaching for pieces in rustic oranges, warm chocolate browns, plummy purples, mustard yellows and soft creams will add to the cozy, homey feel of the holiday.
This Target bodysuit is one of my favorite finds, and it’s as affordable as it is comfortable. I have a long torso and struggle to find bodysuits that fit properly. This one is excellent, and it’s available in a variety of other shades and prints. The fabric is lovely – it will protect you from the cold weather outside but it won’t leave you sweating once you’re inside.
My skirt is an oldie-but-goodie from Express several years ago. It’s one of the first items I purchased when I was trying to redo my wardrobe after graduating from college. The majority of it is now long gone, but this is a winner I’ve held onto. And for good reason, I think. This skirt is super flattering and comfortable. It also works well with the changing trends. It’s a fit-and-flare, but not so 2013 that it looks completely outdated. I still reach for this multiple times every fall and winter. Loft currently has a very similar option that’s on sale!
I’m linking a ton of other affordable clothing options that would be amazing for Thanksgiving this year. It’s still a couple of weeks away, so anything you order should have plenty of time to get to you before the holiday. I’ve got my eye on this emerald sweater dress from Mango – it looks so snuggly.
