Is there a color that sums up summer better than coral? Every time I see it and wear it, I’m hit with the overwhelming nostalgia that comes with the warmer months. Memories of the beach, visions of bright sunshine. The color sparks absolute joy for me.
Technically coral is “out” and hasn’t been “in” since the mid 2010s. But I’m here to fight for its reintroduction into the trend cycle because it deserves more love than it gets.
Back then, the color was plastered on skinny jeans and sheer button down tops. Coral is a shade that embodies the true essence of summer, and it doesn’t have to be worn in a tacky or overly-neon way. In fact, there are a ton of gorgeous pieces you can buy today that showcase coral in a more toned-down, refined and elegant way.
While I wouldn’t describe the outfit I’m wearing here as particularly elegant, I think it certainly shows how coral can be worn in a more modern way. A sundress and sandals isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but it’s also not screaming 2013.
The dress is an oldie-but-goodie that I got from Zara last year. Everyone and their mother seems to love Zara, but 99% of the time, I am not impressed. It’s like an overpriced Forever21 with the quality to match. H&M and Mango are much better fast-fashion options in terms of sizing, fit and longevity.
Anyways, this particular dress is one of the only things I’ve ever found at Zara that I truly adore. It’s an easy, breezy sundress with a fully-smocked top, gently tiered mini skirt and the lightest cotton fabric. It’s perfect for the hot, hot weather in August.
I think coral looks especially spectacular with gold accents, so I paired the dress with a gold coin necklace, some sandals with gold hardware, and my Chloe Nile bag that also has some gold to it with the bracelet handle. I finished everything off with a classic pearl headband.
The key to wearing coral and making it look updated for 2022 is to go one of two routes. One, wear it in a silhouette or piece that’s trendy right now. This smocked midi dress, little mule sandals and nylon handbag are perfect examples of how the color can be incorporated in a way that feels exciting and new.
Or two, opt for a timeless silhouette or piece that will always be stylish no matter what year it is. Think a simple sweater tank, airy belted wide leg pants or luxe shoulder handbag with a gold chain.
Either way you choose, take a chance on coral this August and add a touch of it to one of your outfits. I think you’ll be surprised how fresh it feels for being “out”.
