Breezy, romantic, beachy, feminine. Those are exactly the adjectives I’d use to describe one of my favorite style aspects about summer – beautiful block prints. I’m a sucker for florals any time of year, but there’s something special about block printing that gives a garment this effortlessly chic look.
Block printing is a creative technique that is thousands of years old. It actually dates largely back to India. It’s the process of pressing or stamping patterns (which are commonly of the floral variety) onto fabric using a carved block and colorful ink.
The result is a unique, richly patterned, gorgeous piece of fabric that can then be made into an array of garments. I find that I’m drawn to block printed dresses this time of year because they are typically made from a light cotton. That means they’re as comfortable and breathable as they are romantic and elegant.
The dress I’m wearing in this post likely wasn’t made from the traditional block printing technique, which is usually done by hand. But, it’s still a lovely – and more affordable! – representation. It’s a perfect option for anyone who really adores the pattern style but doesn’t want to spend $200+ on one dress.
I found my block printed floral midi dress in store at Loft several weeks ago and was truly taken aback by how beautiful it was! I saw it on the mannequin and immediately knew I needed to try it on. I’m wearing a medium, and it is the perfect fit for me.
This dress just brings me joy. It’s a fantastic option for a slightly chilly spring because of the puffed sleeves and longer hemline. The print is a collection of lavender, yellow daisies, violets and other blue flowers.
The skirt is ultra twirly and makes me want to spin around. I didn’t show it, but there’s also a cute cutout at the lower back that gives it a modern touch. I paired this dress with some espadrille platforms and a neutral bag to really let the dress itself shine. Love! It’s also a more modest style, which could be great for moms who are on the go with little kids. I know I’m going to get a ton of wear out of it this season.
