I’m sure by now you’ve seen Veja sneakers everywhere. On celebrities, on influencers, maybe even out and about in your real life. If you’re curious about whether or not the sustainable French shoe brand lives up to the hype, this unbiased review will hopefully give you a solid answer.
And I’ll cut to the chase in case you want to avoid all the additional hubbub: YES. Veja Campo sneakers are totally worth the investment.
I honestly think everyone needs a white sneaker in their wardrobe. It’s such a versatile shoe. They can be paired with dresses to add a “cool girl” flair or styled with jeans and a t-shirt for a relaxed but iconic look. White sneakers transcend time, and there’s one out there for every personal sense of style.
I myself have tried many white sneakers over the years. But in my opinion, there are none that are quite as exceptional as the Veja Campos are.
For a little bit of background on the Veja (pronounced Vey-ja) brand, they started in 2005. According to their website, Veja creates sneakers that mix social projects, economic justice and ecological materials. The brand uses Brazilian and Peruvian organic cotton grown by farmers associations that have respect for both people and environment for the canvas and laces. Veja purchases the Amazonian rubber that makes up the shoes’ soles at four times the market price directly from cooperatives formed by the families of rubber tappers. And for everything else, they use innovative materials like recycled plastic bottles or recycled polyester.
A lot of brands throw around the word “sustainable”, but Veja actually walks the walk.
One of the most popular styles that Veja makes is the Campo shoe, which is the style that I own and love. It’s a flat sneaker that has a bit of a platform due to its chunkier sole, a clean white canvas body, and “V” detailing in a variety of colors with a matching color splash at the heel. I think they have a slight masculine lean to them (which is what makes them balance dresses so perfectly). But they still look elegant and flattering on the female foot.
I am always a size 8 when it comes to shoes, except in anything that has European sizing (i.e. 37, 38, 39, etc.). In European sizing, I am always a size 39. Being a French brand, Veja shoes have European sizing. I ordered my Campo sneakers in my usual size 39, and they were a perfect fit. Not too loose, not too tight. I’d say the Campo style runs true to size, and you should order whatever you normally would with European sizing.
When it comes to which color you should buy, I think Veja does a fantastic job of creating really wearable shades. You could go for something super neutral like this “Natural” hue, or you could go for something slightly brighter like a pink or rich blue. I own the Matcha shade, which is a light sage green.
Even though my shoes are technically not a neutral with the colorful “V”, I find that they go with everything. Here are some outfits I’ve worn them with on the blog:
I’ve owned these sneakers for over a year now. I still absolutely love them as much as I did the first day I tried them on. I’ve worn them at least once a week since owning them, and they look brand new. The quality is phenomenal. You don’t have to baby these shoes and can wear them without worrying you’ll destroy them after a couple of wears. I’m surprised how durable they are for a fashion sneaker, but so far they are holding up to the test of time.
The Veja Campos are also super easy to care for despite being white sneakers. If you happen to get a stain on your shoes, just wipe them down with a damp cloth. I’ve done this with mud, grass and unknown spots, and they just come right off.
There are some people who say the Campo sneakers are a bit painful upon first wear and that they need to be broken in to avoid blisters. However, that was not my experience at all. I instantly found them as comfortable as they are stylish, and my feet did not suffer from any pain, blisters, cuts, etc. I was able to pop them on (with socks) and go about my business as usual.
I love my Veja Campos so much that I never think about branching out and trying another brand. Or honestly, even another style from Veja. I think they nailed the execution of the Campo shoe, and why fix something that’s definitely not broken? These sneakers are a bit of an investment at $165 a pair, but I believe the price is worth it. I’ve gotten so much wear out of the shoes, and they impressively hold up in terms of quality and appearance after so much use. If something tragic were to ever happen to my wardrobe and I had to start from scratch again, a pair of Veja Campo sneakers would be one of my first purchases. No question about it.
